The thing I heard most about was the crack about the Beatles. But when you read it exactly, he was talking about “his first impressions of the Beatles,” way back when they first hit the radio. Well, if you were a long-experienced professional musician and you first heard the songs on Meet The Beatles , I can sort of understand a certain disdain; they sounded like a particularly enthusiastic garage band, but so far from the kind of slick professionals a guy who had produced Frank Sinatra was used to hearing, and you had to be wondering, how the Hell did these guys top the charts for eleven weeks?

Now I don’t know what Quincy Jones would have said if you’d asked him about how good he thought they were by the time they put out Revolver . Jones is a great musician and he’s certainly entitled to his opinions, but if he’d described the Beatles as they sounded on Revolver as “no-playing motherfuckers,” I’d just shake my head, and imagine what super-technical prog rockers might have said the first time they heard the Sex Pistols and the Clash.
